Hey! Don't Do That!

by Daniell Fedron

Minding my business and crossing the busy intersection of 34th Street and Park Avenue, I recently heard the loud screams of a man driving a van. "Hey! Don't do that!" As I hurried to get across the street, I couldn't help but notice that a young lady was holding her cell-phone tightly to her ears and another was actually dialing on her blackberry as she was crossing the street. The man seemed angry enough to stop and scream at them. It was a clear case of driver-pedestrian road-rage.

The young ladies, mindless of what had taken place, kept going without acknowledging that these actions could have cost them a little more than that verbal squabble with the old man. Now, how important could those calls have been? Why couldn't those young ladies put down their phones for a minute to pay attention to the street? Not too long ago, the NYC Police Department started to issue summonses to those caught crossing the streets either with their IPods on or talking on their cell-phones while they crossed. As you can see, people have reverted back to those dangerous habits. Why? A mandate of that nature can only work if the Police Department enforces it. Unfortunately, they're not. As a result, the safety of the distracted individuals flooding the streets seems to be resting on the hands of good people like that man.
Just how much do you value your life? By now, we should all know that listening to loud music devices, making phone calls, playing video games, attempting to program your pc, reading or writing as you cross the street are just plain dumb and stupid things to do. Have you ever heard the saying "Better to lose one minute in your life then to lose your life in one minute?"
My cell-phone is submerged deep in my pocket when I am crossing any of the busy streets in NYC. After a close call with a yellow cab driver a year ago, nobody has to scream, beat me to the ground, or write me a summon to make me understand the severity of this problem. I am fully aware of the dangers of operating any technological apparatus while crossing the street. A word of advice to the savvy and know it all. Take your time to set it up, make that call, listen to your favorite song, dance and enjoy, surf the web if you must but keep your eyes pealed for those already distracted behind the wheel. You are not two years old. Please put down the new toy before you cross.
